In this episode of Sunday Night Mystery, Brett revisits the unsolved case of Asha Bostan, a 22-year-old part-time model from Bristol who disappeared in 1978. Asha was preparing for her sister's wedding but mysteriously vanished after a night out with a business client. Fourteen years later, her remains were discovered in a shallow grave in the Mendip Hills.
A prime suspect from the beginning was Yasuo Soma, Asha's obsessive boyfriend, who was the last person to see her alive. Despite suspicious behavior, including fresh scratches on his face after her disappearance, no charges were ever brought against him. Soma tragically committed suicide in 1985, leaving many unanswered questions.
Though Asha's death was ruled as unlawful killing, the lack of concrete evidence meant her case remained unresolved. Former detective Brian Theobald remained convinced that Soma was responsible for Asha's murder, but the case is still open, with authorities hoping for new leads to bring closure to her family.
Brett ends the episode by reminding listeners of the importance of seeking justice for those lost to such tragic circumstances, and encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

In this episode, Brett explores the chilling case of Wayne Lomas, whose mysterious disappearance in 1988 led to the discovery of his body encased in a one-ton slab of concrete five years later.
Lomas, a car dealer and moneylender with ties to organized crime, vanished from his home in Bristol under suspicious circumstances. His house was found in disarray: doors unlocked, his dogs roaming loose, and a meal half-prepared, signs of a sudden and violent departure. Given his criminal connections, authorities believed he had been kidnapped or murdered by gangland figures, but no trace of him was found until October 1993.

In June 1967, 74-year-old widow Louise Dunne was found raped and strangled in her Easton, Bristol, home. A neighbor noticed an open window, leading to the gruesome discovery. Once a socialite and the wife of a city alderman, Louise had become reclusive after the deaths of her two husbands. Her murder shocked the community, as police launched an intense investigation, interviewing neighbors and gathering evidence. A key clue was a palm print found near the window, prompting police to collect thousands of prints from local men, but no match was ever found. Witnesses reported seeing Louise the evening before and a suspicious man near her home in the early hours of the morning, but these leads failed to identify the killer. Despite exhaustive efforts, including questioning local vagrants and conducting forensic analyses, the case remains unsolved, leaving the identity of Louise Dunne's killer a mystery.

This chapter revisits the tragic case of Winifred Locke, an 80-year-old woman who was brutally murdered in October 1983. Winifred, a widow living with Parkinson's Disease, resided in sheltered accommodation in North Petherton. On the day of the crime, her daughter-in-law, Eva, visited her as usual, unaware it would be their final meeting. The next morning, a staff member at the Baymead Meadow assisted living facility discovered Winifred's body after failing to reach her through the intercom. Winifred had been asphyxiated and sexually assaulted, shocking the close-knit community.
A large-scale investigation led by Detective Superintendent Lew Clark saw more than 1,700 local men interviewed, but the killer was never found. The crime remains unsolved, leaving the community haunted and her family without closure. The motive behind this heinous act against an elderly woman remains a mystery, raising questions about whether it was a crime of opportunity or something more sinister. Despite the passage of time, the pain of Winifred's loss endures, and the quest for justice continues, with the hope that someone might still hold the key to solving this decades-old mystery.

In the 28th episode of Sunday Night Mystery, Brett delves into the unsolved case of Mark Yendell.
In 1984, Mark Yendell, a 33-year-old British Rail steward from Bristol, disappeared after his shift at Bristol Temple Meads railway station. His abandoned car, a bloodstained red Lancia, was found near the Welsh Back waterfront with a briefcase containing £100 inside. The grim discovery led to an investigation, and Yendell's body was later found in Bristol City Docks, revealing he had died from severe head injuries before being thrown into the water.
Despite extensive inquiries, detectives struggled to find a motive for the murder. Initially, suspicion fell on Edward Witt, a friend of Yendell's wife, Susan. She had moved to Bournemouth with Witt but later returned to Bristol and reunited with her husband. Witt was arrested and charged with Yendell's murder, but charges were dropped weeks later, leaving the case unsolved. The police theorized that more than one person might have been involved, given Yendell's size.
The case remains a mystery, with no definitive answers as to why Mark Yendell was killed, leaving his family and investigators searching for closure.

His body was discovered bound with cable ties and electrical flex, indicating a violent struggle. Despite a thorough ransacking of his home, few items were taken, raising questions about the motive.

Welcome back to another episode of Sunday Night Mystery and tonight we uncover the chilling tale of Christopher Hampton, a seemingly ordinary man with a horrifying secret lurking beneath the surface.I’m Brett, and tonight, we’re visiting somewhere familiar to me.Fishponds in Bristol is where my family established a business in the 1800’s and I spent much of my life as a child, I owned a home in Fishponds and my wife was brought up there. With so much of my own and my family’s history so deeply rooted in the area I was immediately drawn to the story of Christopher Hampton. Rapist and Murderer HamptonThe story begins, in the picturesque city of Bath, where cobblestone streets and quaint houses tell tales of simpler times, but a darkness loomed in the form of a brutal rape and murder. Spilling out of the nightclub with the 2am crowds, Melanie Road bid a cheerful farewell to her boyfriend and friends then began walking home. MelanieMelanie had made the journey countless times before but this time was different, this time there was an evil monster waiting for a victim.Melanie, was described as "bubbly" and ambitious, she had a promising future. A diligent student and aspiring archaeologist, she possessed a wisdom beyond her years. However, tragedy struck on the eve of her A-Level exams when Melanie ventured out for a night at the Beau Nash nightclub with friends. Little did she know, it would be her last.As Melanie made her way home, alone, the streets of Bath, once bustling with life, grew quieter and more ominous. In the darkness, she encountered a horror beyond comprehension.Melanie, from Bath in Somerset, was just moments from home when she was raped and stabbed 26 times. The scene of the attackAfter the brutal attack in June of 1984, she was left to die in a pool of blood. Her body was found later by a milkman and his 11-year-old son.Melanie Road, just 17 years old, was tragically assaulted and killed on her way home from a night out in 1984, sending shockwaves through the community and destroying her family forever. Detectives worked tirelessly to bring Melanie's killer to justice, but it would take over three decades before painter and decorator Christopher Hampton was finally held accountable for his heinous crime.Hampton's seemingly normal life concealed a dark secret, a secret that would eventually unravel thanks to a routine DNA swab from his daughter. Little did anyone know, the perpetrator of this heinous crime lived among them, hiding in plain sight behind the facade of a loving husband and father.Christopher Hampton, a painter and decorator, appeared to lead a mundane existence, donning his white overalls each morning before setting off to work in his silver Toyota. But behind closed doors, a sinister truth lay buried for over three decades.Despite his outward appearance of normalcy, Hampton harboured a dark secret, a secret so chilling that it would shake the foundations of trust and decency in his once-idyllic neighbourhood.
His arrest brought a measure of closure to Melanie's family, but the pain of their loss remains. As Hampton serves his life sentence, the echoes of Melanie's tragic death linger, a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring quest for justice. What drove Hampton to commit such unspeakable acts of violence? How did he manage to conceal his monstrous nature from his loved ones for so long?Melanie Road's murder remained unsolved for over 30 years until a twist of fate led investigators to Hampton's doorstep, unravelling a web of lies and deceit that had ensnared an entire community. But perhaps the most haunting aspect of this tale is the sheer normalcy of Hampton's demeanour. To those around him, he was the epitome of an upstanding citizen, a devoted family man. Yet beneath the surface lurked a predator, preying on the innocence of young women with impunity. In the end, it was Hampton's daughter's DNA that convicted him. His 43-year-old daughter had given a routine DNA swab after being arrested for breaking her boyfriend’s necklace during a row. The swab showed a “familial link” to blood and semen left on Melanie’s body. And when detectives swabbed Hampton, there was a match. In May 2016, Hampton, then 64, admitted murdering Melanie at Bristol Crown Court.
He was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 22 years. Mr Justice Popplewell told the rapist and murderer that he will very likely die in prison.Despite the passage of time, the memory of Melanie's final moments continues to haunt those who loved her. Her mother, Jean, still recalls the heart-wrenching moment she realized her daughter was gone.As we reflect on this harrowing story, let’s remember the victims, those whose lives were cut short by senseless violence, and the families left to grapple with the aftermath of betrayal and deceit. But amidst the shadows of uncertainty, one fact remains clear: Melanie Road was more than a victim. She was a daughter, a friend, a young girl whose life was abruptly stolen by a monster, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled dreams. The untimely death serves as a reminder of the darkness that lurks even in all corners of our world. But for now, join us next time as we continue to explore the enigmatic realm of Sunday Night Mystery. Stay safe, and until next time, keep questioning, keep searching, and keep unravelling the mysteries of the worldTime, like a merciless predator, marches on, leaving behind shattered dreams and broken promises. Yet, amidst the shadows of despair, glimmers of hope remain. Join us next time as we delve into another chilling mystery that continues to confound investigators and haunt communities.
