The 28th episode of Sunday Night Mystery delves into the unsolved case of Barry Rubery, a retired farm labourer from Iron Acton, South Gloucestershire. On April 28, 2010, Rubery was brutally murdered after returning home from a dinner at a Masonic lodge in Bristol. His body was discovered bound with cable ties and electrical flex, indicating a violent struggle. Despite a thorough ransacking of his home, few items were taken, raising questions about the motive.
The case remains unresolved despite extensive investigations and public appeals. Suspicion lingers that Rubery may have been targeted due to a dispute related to his storage yard. Investigators have offered a £20,000 reward for information and are seeking details on suspicious vehicles seen near his home, stolen items like a gold Masonic watch, and any changes in behaviour from potential suspects.
The episode reflects on the ongoing search for justice and closure for the Rubery family, emphasizing the tragic and mysterious nature of his death while encouraging viewers to remain vigilant and hopeful for answers.

Welcome back to another episode of Sunday Night Mystery and tonight we uncover the chilling tale of Christopher Hampton, a seemingly ordinary man with a horrifying secret lurking beneath the surface.I’m Brett, and tonight, we’re visiting somewhere familiar to me.Fishponds in Bristol is where my family established a business in the 1800’s and I spent much of my life as a child, I owned a home in Fishponds and my wife was brought up there. With so much of my own and my family’s history so deeply rooted in the area I was immediately drawn to the story of Christopher Hampton. Rapist and Murderer HamptonThe story begins, in the picturesque city of Bath, where cobblestone streets and quaint houses tell tales of simpler times, but a darkness loomed in the form of a brutal rape and murder. Spilling out of the nightclub with the 2am crowds, Melanie Road bid a cheerful farewell to her boyfriend and friends then began walking home. MelanieMelanie had made the journey countless times before but this time was different, this time there was an evil monster waiting for a victim.Melanie, was described as "bubbly" and ambitious, she had a promising future. A diligent student and aspiring archaeologist, she possessed a wisdom beyond her years. However, tragedy struck on the eve of her A-Level exams when Melanie ventured out for a night at the Beau Nash nightclub with friends. Little did she know, it would be her last.As Melanie made her way home, alone, the streets of Bath, once bustling with life, grew quieter and more ominous. In the darkness, she encountered a horror beyond comprehension.Melanie, from Bath in Somerset, was just moments from home when she was raped and stabbed 26 times. The scene of the attackAfter the brutal attack in June of 1984, she was left to die in a pool of blood. Her body was found later by a milkman and his 11-year-old son.Melanie Road, just 17 years old, was tragically assaulted and killed on her way home from a night out in 1984, sending shockwaves through the community and destroying her family forever. Detectives worked tirelessly to bring Melanie's killer to justice, but it would take over three decades before painter and decorator Christopher Hampton was finally held accountable for his heinous crime.Hampton's seemingly normal life concealed a dark secret, a secret that would eventually unravel thanks to a routine DNA swab from his daughter. Little did anyone know, the perpetrator of this heinous crime lived among them, hiding in plain sight behind the facade of a loving husband and father.Christopher Hampton, a painter and decorator, appeared to lead a mundane existence, donning his white overalls each morning before setting off to work in his silver Toyota. But behind closed doors, a sinister truth lay buried for over three decades.Despite his outward appearance of normalcy, Hampton harboured a dark secret, a secret so chilling that it would shake the foundations of trust and decency in his once-idyllic neighbourhood.
His arrest brought a measure of closure to Melanie's family, but the pain of their loss remains. As Hampton serves his life sentence, the echoes of Melanie's tragic death linger, a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring quest for justice. What drove Hampton to commit such unspeakable acts of violence? How did he manage to conceal his monstrous nature from his loved ones for so long?Melanie Road's murder remained unsolved for over 30 years until a twist of fate led investigators to Hampton's doorstep, unravelling a web of lies and deceit that had ensnared an entire community. But perhaps the most haunting aspect of this tale is the sheer normalcy of Hampton's demeanour. To those around him, he was the epitome of an upstanding citizen, a devoted family man. Yet beneath the surface lurked a predator, preying on the innocence of young women with impunity. In the end, it was Hampton's daughter's DNA that convicted him. His 43-year-old daughter had given a routine DNA swab after being arrested for breaking her boyfriend’s necklace during a row. The swab showed a “familial link” to blood and semen left on Melanie’s body. And when detectives swabbed Hampton, there was a match. In May 2016, Hampton, then 64, admitted murdering Melanie at Bristol Crown Court.
He was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 22 years. Mr Justice Popplewell told the rapist and murderer that he will very likely die in prison.Despite the passage of time, the memory of Melanie's final moments continues to haunt those who loved her. Her mother, Jean, still recalls the heart-wrenching moment she realized her daughter was gone.As we reflect on this harrowing story, let’s remember the victims, those whose lives were cut short by senseless violence, and the families left to grapple with the aftermath of betrayal and deceit. But amidst the shadows of uncertainty, one fact remains clear: Melanie Road was more than a victim. She was a daughter, a friend, a young girl whose life was abruptly stolen by a monster, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled dreams. The untimely death serves as a reminder of the darkness that lurks even in all corners of our world. But for now, join us next time as we continue to explore the enigmatic realm of Sunday Night Mystery. Stay safe, and until next time, keep questioning, keep searching, and keep unravelling the mysteries of the worldTime, like a merciless predator, marches on, leaving behind shattered dreams and broken promises. Yet, amidst the shadows of despair, glimmers of hope remain. Join us next time as we delve into another chilling mystery that continues to confound investigators and haunt communities. Until then, stay vigilant, and never forget those who have been lost to the shadows.Although, in the spine-tingling realm of Sunday Night Mystery, some enigmas defy resolution, leaving us to simply ponder secrets of the past.

Melanie Hall: Bath 1996

Sunday Night Mystery Case Files: Episode 22
Helen Fleet: First of the Dogwalker Murders? Weston-super-Mare 1987
Welcome back to Sunday Night Mystery, your guide through the chilling enigmas of the unknown. I’m Brett, and tonight, we delve into the dark tale of Helen Fleet, whose peaceful retirement in Weston-super-Mare ended in a gruesome and baffling murder.
In the serene seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, Helen Fleet, a 66-year-old retired factory inspector, enjoyed her days walking her two dogs, Bilbow and Cindy, in Worlebury Woods. On March 28, 1987, Helen left her blue Datsun in Worlebury Hill Road, unaware that this routine stroll would be her last. Stabbed ten times, battered, and strangled, Helen's screams shattered the tranquility of the woods.
The community was shaken as news of her brutal death spread. Despite a massive investigation involving over 120 officers, her killer was never found. What could drive someone to murder a beloved widow known for her gentle nature?
Helen’s final moments remained a mystery. Two people reported hearing a scream at 12:20 p.m. that day. Twenty minutes later, Helen’s friend, Sylvia Lewis, alerted by the barking dogs, discovered her lifeless body. Sylvia’s frantic call brought David and Hazel Davies to the scene, where they found Helen surrounded by her faithful companions, Bilbow and Cindy.
Police theorized Helen may have known her killer after reports surfaced that she had been talking to a youth. Witnesses saw two other youths fleeing the woods, and a mysterious figure carrying a yellow hard hat or crash helmet became the investigation's focus. Over the years, new leads emerged. Witnesses described a youth in a white ski jacket with red and blue trim and another in a ski jacket with red and grey squares. Thirteen years later, a potential witness came forward, leading to a photofit release in hopes of identifying the mystery youth.
Retired police officer Chris Clark suggested Helen might have been the first victim of a serial killer, linking her murder to the unsolved cases of Kate Bushell and Lyn Bryant, who were also killed while walking dogs. These cases, spanning over a decade, shared chilling similarities: women attacked in broad daylight, isolated areas, brutal violence, yet no signs of sexual assault or robbery.
The elusive killer appeared both meticulous and impulsive, a paradox of organization and spontaneity. Despite the horror, a pattern emerged: the geographic proximity of the killings and the untouched dogs suggested a deeper psychological motive. Clark's insights painted a picture of a methodical predator driven by madness.
As detectives from multiple jurisdictions continue their relentless pursuit of justice, the truth remains hidden in the shadows. Helen’s killer remains at large, and the mystery of Worlebury Woods endures. Will the truth ever come to light?
Join us next time on Sunday Night Mystery as we explore another chilling case that haunts communities. Stay vigilant, and remember those lost to the shadows. The truth may be hidden, but as long as we keep the investigation alive, it's never truly lost.
